The Facts

At this point in time, Indigneous Canadians may have been stopped at this stage. Here's why:

  • If a court or an Indian agent determines that an Indigenous person was "wasting time" at a pool room, the individual may have been banned for up to 1 year.
  • This rule specifically targeted Indigenous people, as all other ethnicities and cultures were allowed in regardless of intentions.
  • Why? The government believed Indigenous people should be focused on "productive" tasks such as jobs leading to economic growth, rather than amusement.
  • Simply put, leisure activities such as pool, dance halls or any other licensed areas were considered acceptable for everyone else, except for Indigenous people.
